'No Cold War led by the US!' - Lula labels UNSC ‘war leaders’, urges to ‘stop this madness’

"President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, issued a call to the permanent members of the UN Security Council to secure peace and not drag the world into another Cold War. The Brazilian leader was speaking at the 'International Global Progressive Mobilisation' forum in Barcelona on Saturday. "The United Nations was created to take care of peace, to take care of cordiality, fraternity," said Lula, before hitting out at the UNSC permanent members. “They have turned into five war leaders,” he declared. "President Trump, President Putin, President Macron and with permission of England. For the love of God, fulfill your obligations to guarantee peace in the world. The world cannot take it anymore." "We do not want a Cold War from the United States. Peace. We want freedom. Peace," he added. The Brazilian leader pointed to conflicts in the Middle East, questioning the legitimacy of military interventions and warning of their humanitarian consequences. "Today we have war. The invasion of Iraq was a lie. And the genocide carried out by Israel in Gaza is another very big lie," he continued. Lula also remarked on restrictions to free trade, hitting out at ‘abusive tariffs’ and approaches to Global South nations as ‘mere containers of raw materials’. “To be progressive in the international arena is to defend a reformed multilateralism," he explained. The IV Meeting in Defence of Democracy is also taking place in Barcelona, a high-level political space with participation from the leaders of Spain, Mexico and Colombia, among others. Both meetings are described as part of a broader agenda aimed at consolidating international alliances and creating a counterbalance to Washington's influence by providing coordinated responses to current political and social challenges."
