Thai CG hosts event to celebrate Songkran festival

KARACHI: The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Karachi here hosted a vibrant celebration of Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year. The event brought together members of the Thai community, Pakistani business partners, diplomats, and distinguished guests to experience the joy and traditions of one of Thailand’s most beloved festivals. Songkran marks the beginning of the traditional Thai calendar and is celebrated across Thailand with water festivities, family gatherings, and acts of respect. The water symbolises the washing away of misfortunes and the welcoming of a fresh start filled with happiness and prosperity. Surashete Boontinand, Consul-General of Thailand and Mrs Sriprapai Boontinand, in Karachi, presided over the celebration. In his address, he spoke about the deeper meaning of Songkran beyond the joyful water play – emphasising family unity, renewal, and respect for elders. He then led the traditional water pouring ceremony, where guests gently pour scented water over the hands of elders as a gesture of reverence and to seek blessings for the new year. The Consul-General was joined by Chotirat Komaradat and Halim Wainalai, Consuls, along with consulate staff who warmly welcomed the guests, especially the kids. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
