'UN has now become a toothless organisation' - Ramaphosa calls for 'comprehensive' reforms, greater representation in Security Council

"South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called for broader reforms of the United Nations, criticising the lack of representation in the Security Council, during a speech in Barcelona on Saturday. "We must build a world of genuine multilateral cooperation with global institutions that are representative," Ramaphosa said. "We must stand firm on the reform of global institutions." He also demanded 'comprehensive' reforms of financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. "It cannot be institutions that continue to represent Western interests only." The UN Security Council's efficacy has been called into question due to a lack of representativeness, effectiveness, and enforcement. "We have the whole continent of Africa with 1.4 billion people. It's not represented. We have Latin America. We have big countries like Brazil [...] India," he added. "We must advance peace through diplomacy, through dialogue, through multilateral organisations, and not have a few countries that are going to have a veto vote and block everything," Ramaphosa underscored. He stated UNSC member states were violating international law and human rights law, while criticising the UN for being a 'toothless organisation.' "The resurgence in unlawful wars of aggression and genocide in places like Palestine are linked to the ideology of supremacy," the president proclaimed. The remarks came at the Global Progressive Mobilisation (GPM) summit in Barcelona, also attended by other world leaders, including Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Claudia Sheinbaum, and Gustavo Petro."
