'A different Europe is possible' - PfE blast VdL's 'lockdown' proposal over energy crisis, calls for Russian supplies, nuclear

"Leaders of Patriots for Europe (PfE) on Saturday lashed out at the European Commission and Ursula von der Leyen for suggesting a 'lockdown' in the face of the energy crisis, as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to choke global supplies. Lega Party Leader Matteo Salvini pointed to several ways to guarantee European energy security without negatively impacting European business and living standards by cutting back on usage and allowing prices to spiral. “The geniuses from Brussels propose to have a new lockdown to fight against the energy crisis," he mocked. "This is the ingenuity of von der Leyen. She wants a new lockdown. We say no." "There is an energy crisis and we want to switch off the light. This is nonsense," he added. "The United States has suspended until May 16th sanctions that were blocking the trade and purchase of oil from Russia," Salvini said. "I'm saying if Washington does that, then Brussels should follow suit." "I will add that Europe and Italy again should be a nuclear power," he continued, stressing that in his understanding, this does not involves weapons used 'to threaten', but efficient nuclear power "in order to give safe energy to factories, schools, hospitals and homes." Criticising the Green Deal, other PfE leaders accused Brussels of forcing European countries to spend millions of euros to install charging stations to promote electric vehicles, which they said played into the hands of speculators and China. "With these absurd regulations, Von der Leyen wanted to brutally impose a ban on the sale of new cars with combustion engines without taking industrial realities into account," National Rally President Jordan Bardella told supporters. "We no longer want the Green Deal. We want people to be able to work and be given the possibility to work," Salvini added. The comments were made in Piazza Duomo in Milan during a large gathering of PfE supporters organised by the Lega party."
