"Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticised the US, the EU and Israel questioning the legitimacy of military action in Gaza, Iran and Lebanon, at the 'Global Progressive Mobilisation' forum in Barcelona on Saturday. "A genocide is carried out by Israel in Gaza. It is another very big lie. And now the bombing of Lebanon by Israel. On what pretext? The invasion of Iran by the United States. On what pretext?," the president wondered. He went on to recall diplomatic efforts led by Brazil in 2010 alongside other countries in an attempt to curb Iran's nuclear programme through multilateral agreements, an initiative that ultimately failed on the international stage because the EU and the US rejected them, according to Lula. "In 2010, I went to Iran, together with India, together with Turkey, to negotiate with Ahmadinejad [former President of Iran 2005-2013] an agreement for peaceful purposes. After two days, Ahmadinejad accepted. And what happened? The European Union and the United States did not accept the agreement, and now they are here again, building the idea that Iran was going to build an atomic bomb," Lula stated. The Brazilian president questioned the construction of global narratives about entire regions. "We have to put an end to this story of telling lies and then destroying people. Latin America is portrayed as if it were the world of drug trafficking," said the head of state. US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, which came into effect on Friday. The announcement came after Washington hosted direct talks between Lebanese and Israeli officials. On 8 April, the United States and Iran reached a conditional two-week ceasefire agreement, followed by talks in Islamabad brokered by Pakistan, which have so far failed to lead to a final agreement between the two sides."
