Clearing the way - UNIFIL and Lebanese Army deploy south after peacekeeper killed in 'non-state' gunfire

"United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers moved toward their positions in southern Lebanon on Friday, a day after one was killed and three others wounded by gunfire linked to non-state actors. Footage shows UNIFIL and Lebanese Army vehicles and personnel moving along the road between Marjeyoun and Al-Khayam. UNIFIL announced on Saturday that one of its patrols came under 'small arms fire ' whilst working to clear unexploded ordnance along a road in the village of Ghandourieh. It confirmed that the incident resulted in the death of one peacekeeper and the injury of three others, two of them in critical condition. UNIFIL also said that an investigation to determine the full circumstances of the incident is underway, noting that "the shooting came from non-state actors." French President Emmanuel Macron stated that a French national serving in UNIFIL was killed in the attack, noting that all evidence pointed to 'Hezbollah's responsibility for this attack' and calling on the Lebanese government to 'immediately arrest those responsible'. In response, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the incident and pledged to "pursue those involved and bring them to justice" during a phone call with his French counterpart. Hezbollah denied its responsibility, expressing "surprise at the reckless levelling of accusations, whilst we hear no outcry when the Israeli enemy attacks UNIFIL." US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, which came into effect on Friday. The announcement followed direct talks hosted in Washington between Lebanese and Israeli officials, a move described as the first of its kind in decades. "
