"A group of volunteers in Montevideo painted a mural in support of the Global Sumud flotilla, which aims to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, in a show of solidarity with the Palestinian people. Footage filmed on Saturday shows participants painting the phrase 'Solidarity is tenderness among peoples' on a wall along the Rambla Portuario in the south of the city. The initiative was organised by the Brigada Andres di Pascua. "Today, we want to leave a large mural here as a clear expression of solidarity, and as a reminder that we must keep our attention on Gaza and not be distracted. There is a narrative that a ceasefire is in place, but that is not the case," said Mabel Garcia, coordinator of the Global Sumud Flotilla Uruguay. She said the flotilla includes nearly 100 boats and 750 people, who are trying to deliver food and medicine to Gaza in a solidarity mission in response to Israel's ongoing blockade. "What is happening in Palestine is not possible. It is a true genocide, whether people like to say it or not," she added. Sergio Ovsievich, a member of the Brigada Andres Di Pascua, said the mural is an artistic and political statement denouncing the use of heavy weapons in the Gaza Strip. "The forces driving war want us to look the other way. They want us to turn away from what is happening, from a world that is genuinely under threat from violence and destruction. We believe cultural and artistic expression is our way of saying - enough, stop," he said. Organisers said the event was part of a wider series of activities aimed at promoting international solidarity and drawing attention to the humanitarian crisis in Palestine through urban art."
