"A major fire destroyed around 1,000 homes and displaced thousands in a coastal village in Malaysia's Sabah state on Borneo island on Sunday. Footage recorded at the stilt house settlement shows thick smoke rising over large areas of the village as fire engulfs rows of wooden homes. Residents are later seen standing among the ruins as emergency teams work through the debris. The fire tore through tightly packed wooden houses built on stilts, a settlement home to some of Malaysia's poorest communities. Investigations are underway. Jimmy Lagung, head of the Sandakan district Fire and Rescue Service, said conditions were challenging, adding that narrow access roads hampered the emergency response. Strong winds reportedly accelerated the spread, while low tide limited access to water. More than 9,000 people were affected, according to police and state media. No deaths had been reported at the time of publication. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said federal authorities were working with Sabah officials to provide emergency aid and temporary shelter for those displaced."
