'Why do you not meet and stop these wars?' -  Lula slams UNSC, demands reform of 'paralysed' WTO to reflect Global South interests

"Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticised the UN for not doing enough to stop global conflicts and called for a reform of the World Trade Organisation to reflect the interests of the Global South, in Hanover on Sunday. "The world is experiencing the highest number of conflicts in its history since the Second World War. One must ask President Trump, President Putin, President Xi Jinping, President Macron and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom: what is the Security Council for? Why do you not meet and stop these wars," he asked. He went on to call for 'fair and balanced multilateralism' and a reform of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to incorporate the interests of the Global South. "A new development paradigm requires fair and balanced multilateralism. The paralysis of the WTO and the deadlocks of its latest conference point to the need to refound the organisation. The effective incorporation of the interests of the Global South is an essential condition for multilateral arrangements to be legitimate and relevant," Lula said. Lula pointed out persisting global inequalities and criticised high defence spending in the face of issues such as hunger, illiteracy, and lack of access to water and electricity. "It is not possible, in the 21st century, when we have not yet solved the problem of hunger, that we are spending on war and nothing can end hunger on the planet," he stated. He also said that Brazil was among the countries least affected by rising oil prices as he appeared to comment on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. "Brazil is one of the countries least affected by the madness inflicted upon the Earth. We are not suffering from rising oil prices as many countries are, because the government has taken measures and Brazil imports only 30% of its needs," he noted. This comes as Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva attended the opening gala of the Hanover industrial trade fair for mechanical and electrical engineering and digital industries during Lula's two-day visit to Germany.
