"France's opposition leader Jean-Luc Melenchon expressed disapproval of what he called the world's 'half-hearted resistance' to Israel's military operation in Lebanon during a protest in Paris on Sunday. Footage shows demonstrators waving Lebanese flags, chanting slogans and holding placards. "It is the sister nation of France," Melenchon, leader of La France Insoumise, told protesters about Lebanon. "This moment of sadness, I must say, is also sometimes a moment of shame." He went on to criticise international handling of the crisis and the role of peacekeeping missions. "How could we have let things go to the point where they are today? Because it is already the result of much cowardice, much abandonment, many deceived words. A lot of pretenses and half-hearted resistance," he added. He condemned attacks on peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, saying they have a mandate to secure borders, especially since the Lebanese state "has been put out of state to be able to do it without anyone helping it." Hassan Darer, coordinator of the Lebanon Emergency Collective, proclaimed that Europe had begun to take a stand to stop the conflict from spreading across the Middle East. "I hope that France will step up to the plate." The protest was organised by the Urgence Liban group as a ten-day ceasefire went into effect on Friday between Lebanon and Israel. Nearly 2,300 people have been killed in Israeli strikes on Lebanon since the war began on March 2, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health."
