"Israel's Defence Forces (IDF) vowed to take 'appropriate measures' after it said that an initial investigations confirmed the veracity of a viral image showing one of its soldier smashing a statue of Jesus Christ with a sledgehammer in southern Lebanon. The incident began circulating on social media platforms two days ago. However, the exact date of the event could not be independently verified at the time of publication. The IDF confirmed overnight Sunday that the incident took place in southern Lebanon following an 'initial examination', via a post on X. "The IDF views the incident with great severity and emphasises that the soldier’s conduct is wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops," the statement continued, adding that the incident is being further investigated by its Northern Command. "Appropriate measures will be taken against those involved in accordance with the findings," it concluded. It comes as US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, which came into effect on Friday, following direct talks hosted in Washington between Lebanese and Israeli officials. Israel says it plans to create a 'security zone' in the neighbouring country, extending from the border to the Litani River — approximately 10% of Lebanon's territory."
