A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the north-east coast of Japan on Monday, triggering tsunami warnings across several prefectures and forcing authorities to order evacuations along the Pacific shoreline. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake hit at 4:52pm local time in waters off Sanriku at a depth of 10km. The tremor registered an upper 5 on the national seismic intensity scale, strong enough to disrupt movement and damage structures.
