America's shame - Dramatic footage of 12-year Salvadoran Civil War *ARCHIVE* *DISTRESSING*

"Dramatic archive footage from El Salvador's brutal civil war shows clashes between the US-backed military government and left-wing groups; a conflict resulted in over 75,000 dead, many at the hands of state forces, including 'death squads'. The uprising began in October 1979, amid severe inequality in the country - and fuelled by US fears about the rise of communism, which saw America provide huge amounts of military aid and training to the government. Footage from 1980 and 1981 features mass protests. Activists can be seen distributing leaflets calling for people to participate in anti-government events. People can be seen marching with placards and flags, chanting slogans, and clashing with law enforcement officers, as well as some protesters carrying the injured and bodies of those killed scattered on the ground. The video also shows Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador conducting mass in a cathedral. Later, he can be seen in a coffin at his funeral after being assassinated on March 24, 1980. The Salvadoran Civil War between the government, backed by the US, and the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, which received support from Cuba and the USSR, lasted for twelve years from October 1979 to January 16, 1992, when the Chapultepec Peace Accords were signed. As well as the more than 75,000 dead, around 8,000 people were reported 'missing'. The UN Truth Commission found that state groups such as the army and 'death squads' were behind more than 80 per cent of civilian deaths."
