Marcos inspects Service Contracting Program implementation at Araneta Center terminal

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday inspected the rollout of the government’s Service Contracting Program (SCP) at the Araneta Center Passenger Terminal in Cubao, Quezon City. The SCP, being implemented by the Department of Transportation, is one of the administration’s interventions to address the skyrocketing prices of fuel triggered by hostilities in the Middle East. It will run for two to three weeks. “We're doing this, first and foremost, for our operators and drivers because the price of oil is too high, the price of diesel is too high, and they're no longer making a profit. If they're no longer making a profit, they won't go out anymore—you'll have no vehicles to ride. So, first and foremost, we'll support the drivers and operators. Second, there are discounts we're providing for the passengers," Marcos said in Filipino. "As long as the price of oil remains high, the government's assistance will continue," he added. According to the DOTr, at least 19,000 public utility vehicles (PUV) — traditional and modern jeepneys as well as UV Express units, across the country have signed up for the SCP. Under the initiative, the government will pay drivers based on distance traveled: P30 per kilometer for traditional jeepneys, P40 per kilometer for modern jeepneys, and P100 per kilometer for buses.
