"Dozens of relatives of ISIS detainees staged a protest outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates building in Damascus on Monday, demanding information about the fate of their families after they were transferred from prisons in northeastern Syria to Iraq by international coalition forces. Footage shows protesters gathered outside the ministry building, holding photos of the detained and banners reading, “To our esteemed government, bring back our sons before you bring back our oil” and 'Freedom for our prisoners'. Security personnel were also seen attempting to disperse the crowd. On January 21, US Central Command began transferring ISIS prisoners from northeastern Syria to Iraqi prisons following violent clashes between transitional government forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). During the unrest, several ISIS detainees escaped from al-Shaddadi Prison in the southern countryside of al-Hasakah province. The Iraqi Ministry of Justice announced in mid-February that 5,703 prisoners from 61 countries had been transferred, including 3,543 Syrians. Baghdad described the move as a 'temporary measure', calling on countries whose nationals are among the detainees to repatriate and prosecute them. "
