THE Manila city government on Monday classified the air quality in the city as “unhealthy for sensitive groups” as a fire at a sanitary landfill in Navotas City continues to smolder. In a statement, the Manila Public Information Office said the classification comes after air quality sensors activated by the Department of Environment and Public Services, and thermal drone images by the Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department showed the extent of damage caused by the fire. Thermal imaging enabled responders to detect heat signatures and pinpoint areas of extreme temperature within the landfill, providing the local government with a clearer picture of the situation and helping speed up firefighting operations, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said in Filipino in a Facebook post. Given the deteriorating air quality, Domagoso urged residents — particularly vulnerable sectors such as children, senior citizens and individuals with respiratory illnesses — to continue wearing face masks for protection.
