Pasig tests recycled-plastic housing for community upgrades

MANILA, Philippines — Pasig City is testing a transition housing unit made from recycled plastic as a temporary shelter option for families who may be displaced during community upgrading works. Mayor Vico Sotto said Monday evening that the modular unit may help residents temporarily while infrastructure projects were being carried out in their original communities. He said the sample unit, designed by Evergreen Labs, could be completed in two weeks and was durable despite being made from recycled plastic. The city chief said Pasig has awarded thousands of lots to Pasigueño families, but acknowledged that some areas in the city still needed to be physically upgraded. He said the modular setup could become a useful temporary housing model as the city improved older communities. Foreign officials from Sweden, Denmark and Norway, along with the Nordic Council of Ministers, were present during the presentation of the sample housing unit. The project gives Pasig a possible faster-build relocation option as it works on community improvement and housing-related upgrades.
