'It's auspicious to buy gold on this day' - Shoppers flood Delhi markets as Akshaya Tritiya fever defies soaring prices

"Jewellery stores in Delhi enjoyed a rush of customers on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, as buyers thronged to purchase gold and silver despite record-high prices ahead of the festival, which is considered highly auspicious time in the Hindu religion for buying precious metals. Footage captured on Sunday shows customers entering the a jewellers and trying on jewellery. A board displaying the gold rate is seen outside the shop. Various types of gold ornaments are on display inside the store. "Today is the day for the worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu. It is auspicious to buy gold on this day because if you buy even a small thing, you receive wealth and prosperity," explained Rithika Magho, a customer. She acknowledged that gold prices have risen significantly. "We still buy to fulfil the custom," she added. The Sanskrit word 'Akshaya' means 'never diminishing,' making it auspicious to purchase gold to invite eternal prosperity, good fortune, and abundance in Hindu religious beliefs. Indians celebrated Akshaya Tritiya, the second-biggest gold-buying festival after Dhanteras. It has long been regarded as one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar and has evolved into a major driver of India's festive consumption economy. The day is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Parasurama, considered an incarnation of Vishnu, and the beginning of the Treta Yuga. It is also believed to be the day the River Ganges descended to Earth."
