A GLOBAL pharmaceutical company launched an initiative to increase kidney health awareness through early detection at the community level. In a statement on Tuesday, Boehringer Ingelheim said its “Iwas Dialysis, Ligtas Kidneys: Get CheCKD Habang Maaga Pa!” (“Avoid dialysis, safer kidneys: Get checked while it’s still early”) campaign, which kicked off in Quezon City, ensures that screening and awareness on kidney health remain accessible to all. “By partnering with barangay health centers and equipping community health workers, we help bring essential kidney health services closer to families who may otherwise have limited access. Early detection can make a real difference in people’s lives, and we are proud to support these efforts,” said Dr. Bin Wang, general manager of Boehringer Ingelheim Philippines Inc. Boehringer Ingelheim noted that 13 million Filipinos, or 11.2 percent of the population, are living with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Aside from this, 1 out of 3 patients has kidney disease in the late stages, driving up dialysis costs. This highlights the need for early detection mechanisms. The program sought to empower barangay health workers (BHWs). Over 200 health care providers — including doctors and BHWs from 20 barangay — have been trained to conduct initial health assessments, communicate effectively with patients, and assist in administering the urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio test. To date, the initiative has benefited over 1,500 Filipinos, who have received free kidney health screenings. Those with abnormal results are referred to health care facilities for further evaluation and care. The initiative is part of its global Sustainable Development for Generations commitment, which seeks to improve health outcomes for 50 million people in underserved communities worldwide. A city-wide rollout in Antipolo City followed the campaign’s launch in Quezon City.
