LTFRB suspends bus firm fleet after crash

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has suspended for 30 days the operations of nine buses owned by Delmonte Motor Works Inc. following a fatal road crash in Pagbilao, Quezon that left two passengers dead and 31 others injured. In a statement issued Tuesday, LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza II said a show cause order had been served on the bus operator in connection with the incident, which occurred along the national road in Barangay Silangang Malicboy. “We will be giving them the opportunity to explain their side as part of due process. But they are mandated to explain why their certificate of public convenience should not be suspended or revoked,” Mendoza said. The LTFRB said the crash may have violated regulations on ensuring passenger safety in public land transportation. Aside from the bus directly involved in the accident, eight other units operated by the firm were also suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. The agency directed the company to submit maintenance records of its fleet, noting that roadworthiness tests would be conducted on all its buses. The driver involved in the crash was ordered to undergo drug testing and attend a seminar on public safety. The LTFRB set the first hearing on the case for May 7. Failure to comply with the SCO may result in a P5,000 fine, the agency said.
