Pasig tests recycled-plastic houses as temporary shelters

PASIG City is testing a transition housing unit made from recycled plastic as a temporary shelter option for families who may be displaced during community upgrading works. Mayor Vico Sotto said Monday that the modular unit may help the city temporarily house residents while infrastructure projects are being carried out in their original communities. He said the sample unit, designed by Evergreen Labs, can be completed in two weeks and is durable despite being made from recycled plastic. Sotto said Pasig has already awarded thousands of lots to Pasigueño families, but acknowledged that some areas in the city still need physical upgrades. He said the modular setup could become a useful temporary housing model as the city improves older communities. Foreign officials from Sweden, Denmark and Norway, along with the Nordic Council of Ministers, were present during the presentation of the sample housing unit. The project could give Pasig a faster-build relocation option as it works on community improvement and housing-related upgrades.
