"Heaps of trash have started to dominate the streets of otherwise culturally rich Sicily as soaring fuel prices due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have doubled the cost of waste disposal. Footage shows garbage bins overflowing as cars stop to throw in more trash. High fuel costs have created an unexpected problem for the city. Waste that used to be taken abroad for disposal is now piling up at the landfills, creating ‘mountains’ of garbage. The cost of waste disposal has increased from €200 ($235.34) to around €400 ($470.68) per tonne. Oil prices have risen sharply since the conflict in the Middle East began, with Iran closing the critical waterway in retaliation. Since the war, the per-barrel cost has hovered near $100."
