Rohri Station up-gradation: minister of railways inaugurates project

KARACHI: Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Railways, Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, on Tuesday inaugurated Rs 1.33 billion (USD4.8 million) projects to upgrade the historic Rohri Railway Station, aiming to modernize infrastructure and improve passenger facilities in the region. Abbasi, accompanied by Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, laid the foundation stone during a ceremony at Rohri Junction, one of the country’s oldest railway hubs. Speaking at the event, the Railways Minister said the project would be completed within six months, adding that strong coordination between federal and provincial institutions would ensure timely execution. “Rohri Junction, which is over 150 years old, will be transformed into a modern facility,” Abbasi said, noting that the upgrade would enhance services for passengers and support regional connectivity. He expressed satisfaction over ongoing development in Sukkur and Rohri, highlighting improvements in higher education and healthcare infrastructure in the area. Abbasi also said Pakistan Railways was adopting partnership models to manage railway hospitals, aimed at providing free medical treatment to employees. He added that the Thar coal project, valued at around Rs 90 billion, would be inaugurated soon. Referring to broader rail sector reforms, the Minister said the Main Line-1 (ML-1) project was being extended to 480 km and would be completed under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with political support from other stakeholders.
