Exercise is great for our hearts , minds , and longevity . But you don’t need to be a full-blown gym rat to see the benefits: not only is brisk walking a pretty decent workout , but even a couple of extra minutes of activity a day can help us live longer. Experts think that 15 minutes of physical activity a day is the “bare minimum” needed to see health-related benefits of exercise. Here’s what the research says can happen to your body if you choose to spend that quarter of an hour running: 1) You may have better sleep One study found that people who ran for 75 minutes a week (in 15-minute segments, that’d be one run five times a week) seemed to improve their odds of a longer life through better sleep. Researchers said that might be because exercise is key to “maintaining a stable circadian rhythm and a healthy sleep pattern”. 2) You may feel in a better mood A 2020 review found that people who ran for anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour saw improvements to their mental health, and it doesn’t matter whether they did it on a treadmill or out on the open road. Another study from ASICS found that the benefits to participants’ mood kicked in at a rather specific 15 minutes and nine seconds. 3) You might feel sharper A 2021 paper found that running for as little as 10 minutes was enough to boost people’s cognitive ability and mental sharpness. Another study saw benefits at 15 minutes. 4) You may feel more energised A French paper reported that 15 minutes of jogging can leave people with a greater boost in perceived energy than meditating or relaxing for the same period of time. 5) You’ll enjoy heart health benefits Harvard Health said that : “If you run just 15 minutes a day, five days a week, you’ll meet the recommended physical activity guidelines, which call for 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise weekly”. Meeting that guideline is linked to a reduced risk of heart disease or stroke. 6) You may live longer 15 minutes of exercise a day is linked to three years of extra life and a 14% reduced risk of early death, a Lancet study found . More was better, though: every extra 15 minutes of exercise a day reduced all-cause death rates by 4%. Related...
