"The town of Debl in southern Lebanon reinstalled a statue of Jesus Christ on Wednesday, days after it was smashed with a sledgehammer by an Israeli soldier in an incident that sparked widespread condemnation. Footage shows Italian soldiers from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) transporting the new statue in the presence of Papal Ambassador Paolo Borgia. It was later displayed to residents inside a church before being installed in the same location where the destroyed statue had stood. Lebanese media reported that Italy, at the initiative of the UNIFIL Western Sector Command, had sent a new statue of Christ to Debel to replace the one that was destroyed. Earlier this week, images circulated on social media showing an Israeli soldier smashing a statue of Christ with a sledgehammer. On Tuesday, the Israeli army acknowledged that one of its soldiers had vandalised the statue, while another filmed the act and shared the footage. It said six more soldiers were present at the scene but did not intervene or report the incident. The Israeli military said that two soldiers had been removed from active duty and sentenced to 30 days in military prison, while others ‘who stood by’ had been ‘summoned for clarification’. Later that same day, the Israeli army released a photo it said showed a ‘replacement’ statue of Jesus in the town of Debel. "
