Fewer tropical cyclones forecast up to Oct but most likely to develop into typhoons, super typhoons — Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) saidfewer tropical cyclones would likely occur until October this year but many of them would be typhoons and even super typhoons. Pagasa chief Nathaniel Servando cited the weather agency’s monitoring and analysis that showed nine to 17 tropical cyclones may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility from May until October in 2026. “There would only be fewer number of tropical cyclones based on our forecast especially during the latter of the year but they may develop into typhoons and even super typhoons,” Servando told The Manila Times. The El Niño phenomenon - characterized by cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures (SSTs) over the Philippine Sea and warmer-than-average SSTs in the Central and Eastern Equatorial Pacific – will start weak from June to August but could reach moderate to strong levels between September and November, the Pagasa administrator said. “Strong to very strong El Niño is not being ruled out by October until January next year,” he added. In the meantime, weather specialist Leanne Loreto said most parts of the archipelago would continue to experience clear but hot and humid weather in the next three days. She said three weather systems – ridge of high pressure area (HPA), easterlies and localized thunderstorms – would prevail, bringing hotter temperatures but isolated downpours in some areas during late afternoon and at night. In particular, the ridge or extension of HPA – opposite of low pressure area – has been extending over the eastern sections of Northern and Central Luzon while easterly winds would likely occur over Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The rest of Luzon will be experiencing partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms owing to the effect of the localized thunderstorms, the Pagasa forecaster said.
