Pasig takes over JICA-backed elderly care facility, eyes wider services

MANILA, Philippines — Pasig City has taken over the Japan International Cooperation Agency-backed Magokoro elderly care facility after the completion of its one-year pilot implementation, with the local government set to continue and expand services for senior citizens, the local government said Thursday. Magokoro facility is a 200-square-meter care facility located at the Pasig City Mega Dialysis Center on Eusebio Avenue in San Miguel village where activities intiated by JICA, INFIC Inc. showed how Japanese-style, people-centered care could be adapted to the local context. “Through this JICA-supported pilot initiative, Magokoro PASIG has shown how Japanese-style, people-centered care can be thoughtfully adapted to the local context, providing dignity, comfort, and an improved quality of life for senior citizens,” JICA said. Pasig City said its plans for 2026 to 2028 included improving the exterior of the facility, adding more caregivers and conducting home-based caregiving training for the community. JICA Chief Representative Baba Takashi, INFIC President Masuda Masatoshi and Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto led the project results meeting on April 16, 2026 to confirm the project’s achievements and the city’s future plans for the program. As the project formally transitions to Pasig City, JICA said it expected the initiative to continue growing under stronger local ownership and operational capacity. “With strengthened local ownership and operational capacity, Magokoro PASIG is well-positioned to expand its reach and serve more beneficiaries in the years to come,” JICA said. It added that the initiative was expected to inspire and serve as a model for inclusive, community-based elderly care in the Philippines.
