"A massive fire broke out at a warehouse operated by the state-owned Food for Welfare in La Escondida neighbuorhood of Zacatecas on Tuesday, resulting in millions of pesos in losses. Footage shows flames engulfing the facility, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky as first responders work to bring the fire under control. Images from Wednesday capture the aftermath, with the warehouse left in ruins. "There were no fatalities, there were no injured, but we must be very, very clear that everything inside was a total loss - 100%.100% total loss," said Jorge Gallardo Alvarez, coordinator of Civil Protection in Zacatecas. Alvarez said that the destroyed stored goods included beans, corn, oil and hygiene products. He added that the structure itself suffered around 90% damage. "We have it 80% under control, 20% remains and total extinguishing is underway," he continued, noting that teams were working simultaneously from the left, center and right sides of the site to fully contain the blaze. According to local authorities, the fire broke out after bean producers allegedly burned tires during a protest over pricing, bureaucratic hurdles and the government's refusal to open official collection centers. Authorities believe the flames may have subsequently spread to nearby warehouses storing food supplies from the Rural Supply Program, which is intended for vulnerable communities. Emergency services from municipal, state and federal levels were deployed to the scene. Preliminary estimates place the value of the damaged goods at more than six million pesos (approximately $346,000), not including losses to infrastructure and equipment, all of which is federally owned. The Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development directly blamed protesters for the incident. However, the Attorney General's Office (FGR) has opened an investigation to determine the exact cause and identify responsibility. President Claudia Sheinbaum said authorities are still working to clarify whether the fire resulted accidentally from objects burned during the protest or whether it constituted a deliberate attack on the facilities."
