President Donald Trump speaks during an event in the State Dining Room of the White House on Tuesday. Donald Trump has “no answer” to the ongoing stalemate in the Iran war, according to a BBC correspondent. The US president announced on Tuesday that he was extending the ceasefire in the conflict indefinitely, despite threatening to destroy “every single power plant and every single bridge” in the country unless a peace deal is agreed. Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz waterway remains closed, as does the US blockade of Iranian ports. On Radio 4′s Today programme, BBC US correspondent David Willis said the US president and his administration appear to have run out of ideas on how to end the war. He said: “The White House press spokesman, Karoline Leavitt, said today that the US blockade of Iranian ports is, as she put it, successfully strangling Iran’s economy. “She also told reporters that President Trump is fully satisfied with the situation as far as the conflict is concerned, and certain that he believes the US is in charge. “But of course President Trump, in that statement yesterday, the extension of the ceasefire agreement, gave no end date to it, and with Iran emphatically refusing to re-open the Strait of Hormuz, we do appear to have reached some sort of stalemate to which the White House has no ready answer.” Figures released by the Office for National Statistics on Wednesday revealed how the spike in oil prices caused by the war is pushing up inflation in the UK.
