The first season of The Rings of Power came to an explosive climax, with a true villain ready to take centre stage. The season 2 finale brought even more terror with the Siege of Eregion, with several characters meeting their demise and Sauron claiming the infamous Nine Rings. In season 3, the show will build towards The Dark Lord edging closer to seducing humankind and forging The One Ring. According to The Hollywood Reporter , the third season will premiere in 2026 , despite earlier rumours that the show won’t return until 2027. Amazon hasn’t yet commented on these reports. Peter Mullan, as King Durin III , won’t be back either, as the king of Khazad-dûm died fighting the Balrog. Sam Hazeldine’s Adar also won’t make it into the third season since Orcs killed him at Sauron’s order. The same can be said for Alex Tarrant as Valandil – Elendil’s ally was murdered by Kemen, the son of Pharazôn. What will the plot of The Rings of Power season 3 be? Fans are in for a surprise in the third season: a time jump. The synopsis published by Amazon reads: Jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft The One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer Middle-earth at last. The War of the Elves mentioned is a significant event in the Second Age of Tolkien’s universe, as it’s the first great clash with Sauron. It seems that in season 3 The Dark Lord will be at the peak of his power. It comes as no surprise, since at the end of season 2, he claimed the nine Rings of Power for Men and, with an army of Orcs, destroyed Eregion. Prime Video In the third season, Sauron will seduce humankind. As you may remember from The Lord of the Rings movies, Sauron gifted his nine rings to nine human kings who pledged their loyalty to him. As time passed, the dark magic consumed them and turned them into the infamous Ringwraiths, AKA The Nazgûl, AKA The Nine – in LOTR, they manifested as Black Riders. As for Elves, after the Eregion kingdom’s collapse, Gil-galad, Elrond, Arondir, Galadriel and other survivors relocated to the valley in the north. Therefore, in the third season, we will likely see the rise of Rivendell, the Elven town known from The Lord of the Rings movies. The third season will probably see a lot of changes in Khazad-dûm. After the death of Durin III, his son, Durin IV, took over the kingdom. His reign certainly won’t be easy, given that the dwarves have awakened the Balrog, a powerful fire demon that in season 2 led to massive destruction in the realm and killed Durin III. Things don’t look good for the Numenór either. The kingdom is in chaos after the Ar-Pharazôn seized power and banished Elendil as a traitor. Prime Video The good news is that Sauron’s enemies can count on some help from a higher force. As suspected, The Stranger, who mysteriously fell from the sky, appeared to be Gandalf. Known as a wizard in the Tolkien universe, he was an angelic being sent in human form to Middle-Earth to help fight the forces of darkness.
