How Long Is This Spring Sunshine Going To Last?

After an exceptionally soggy February , the UK is experiencing an unusually warm and dry April. In fact, we saw the warmest April day in 80 years earlier this month, and temperatures are expected to reach 21°C again in parts of the UK. Some parts of the UK have seen 2% of their usual rainfall in April. As the BBC reports that no rainfall is expected soon, we thought we’d share what we know so far about how long the sunny spell is expected to last. When will the sunshine end this spring? Good news if you’re looking to get out in the garden this weekend: from Saturday 25 April to Monday 27 April, the Met Office said the weather should stay “largely fine and dry with plenty of sunshine”, with “temperatures above average for many”. While fog and frost are expected at night, the days should remain dry and warm. In fact, the Met Office added , “high pressure is likely to remain centred close to or over the UK through the remainder of April and into early May,” even though parts of the west and northwest might get “a little rain at times”. It’s not until 7 May that it’s predicted conditions could become more unsettled. At that point, low pressure will begin to move towards the UK, “Increasing the chance of periods of heavy rain and perhaps strong winds at times”. Though temperatures should remain a little above average, rain will become more likely, especially in the northwest. This uncertainty increases by the middle of May. Why is it so sunny this April? In a similar vein to the relentless rain we saw earlier this year, the jet stream has created a stubborn weather front that’s very hard to break past. Right now, the jet stream is bending across the Atlantic, leaving the UK with an area of high pressure and blocking any rainier conditions. The BBC compared it to an atmospheric “traffic jam”. And until the jet stream gets through that blockage, the conditions are likely to remain sunny. Related... Already Running Hot?
