'Years of neglect!' - Sao Paulo students hit streets demanding higher university funding, new hires and better campuses

"Students from the University of Sao Paulo marched through the city on Thursday as part of an indefinite strike that began on April 14, demanding better conditions for administrative workers and students. Footage shows demonstrators playing drums and holding signs reading: 'USP: a university without belonging,' 'Workers and students united against precarity,' and 'We are on strike!' The protesters are demanding more funding for state universities, equal treatment for professors and administrative staff, expanded student support programmes and better university cafeterias. A PSOL federal deputy said the protest was also calling for decent salaries for administrative workers and higher student scholarships. "The rectorate has granted a salary bonus to teaching staff, which shows that the money is there and that there is room in the budget. What other sectors are demanding is that some of those resources also be used to guarantee decent working and study conditions for staff and students," she indicated. Another protester said Sao Paulo's education sector had suffered 'years of neglect,' and called on USP to hire the professors promised during the 2023 strike and replace faculty members who have still not been replaced. In April, workers and students at more than 50 Brazilian universities staged strikes and protests, demanding higher salaries and better study conditions from President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's government."
