East meets West - Watch iconic moment Soviet, US troops shook hands at Elbe River at end of WWII in Europe *ARCHIVE*

"Archive footage from 1945 shows the iconic moment Soviet, American and Allied troops met and shook hands at the Elbe River near Germany's Torgau at the end of World War II. Soldiers can be seen greeting each other and marching together, as journalists filmed the historic meeting. The video also shows soldiers and officers enjoying meals together and toasting victory over the Nazis. The meeting of Soviet forces advancing from the east and the Allied troops from the west was a key moment at the end of WW2. Although Elbe Day is not an official holiday in any country, it represents a period of co-operation and mutual recognition between US and Soviet forces."
