'No bombs on our soil!' - Rodriguez warns against aggression and sanctions as new US envoy lands in Caracas

"Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodriguez called for full US sanctions relief and warned against any new aggression against the country, as new US envoy John Barrett arrived in Caracas on Thursday. "Why do we want Venezuela free of sanctions? Because we want Venezuela to be able to fully expand, without any kind of restriction, all of its capacities, all of its potential, its immense wealth that has made Venezuela," she said, speaking in Barquisimeto. "We come, as the president of the National Assembly said and as Deputy Romero said, from very difficult moments, which must make both politicians and non-politicians reflect that January 3 must never be repeated in our history and that missiles and bombs must never again fall on our territory," Rodriguez continued. On January 3, 2026, the Washington launched a military operation in Venezuela. During the operation, US forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, charging them with narcoterrorism. The operation included bombings in Caracas and several states and left at least 100 dead, according to Venezuelan authorities.  The US envoy's arrival marks the next phase of the 'three-phase plan' for Venezuela after Maduro's removal, focused on stabilising the country, managing economic recovery, and transitioning toward a new government. "We welcome him; it should mark cooperation that is win-win for both countries. We have made progress and advances, but more is needed, more is needed. There cannot be a single sanction nor should a single sanction remain in force," Rodriguez said. Since Maduro's capture, several sanctions have been partially eased or modified amid the ongoing political transition."
