"Armenians took part in a torchlight procession in Yerevan on Thursday night to commemorate the 111th anniversary of the 'Armenian Genocide' - a term disputed by Turkey - during World War 1. Footage shows thousands walking from Republic Square to the Tsitsernakaberd memorial complex, carrying a huge Armenian flag and holding lit torches and candles. In his address, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the killing of defenseless people showed the deadly consequences of religious hatred, nationalism and xenophobia. The European Parliament declared April 24 as the 'Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Armenian Massacres in the Ottoman Empire'. The deportation of hundreds of thousands of Armenians in 1915-16 is still a highly contentious period in history. Turkey has repeatedly maintained that the events of the time cannot be described as a 'genocide' and estimates that around 300,000 people were killed, while the Armenian side often puts the figure at 1.5 million."
