"War Secretary Pete Hegseth was asked about condemnation from the Pope over the Iran war, as he held the latest Pentagon briefing on Friday. "Pope Leo has made some strident comments about the war in Iran, and the US Conference of Catholic Bishops recently put out a statement suggesting that the war does not fit the requirements of just war theory," one reporter put to him. "Pope's going to do his thing. That's fine. We know what our mission is. We know what authority we have. We're very clear about that. We follow that. The orders of the president," he said. "We've got lawyers all over the place looking at what we're doing and why we're doing it and giving us every authority necessary under the Constitution and under our laws to execute it. So we feel very confident across the spectrum about what we're doing and why we're doing in the legal justification that we're following in order to do it." Earlier, Pope Leo XIV criticised what he described as a constantly shifting US position on the Iran talks during an in-flight address to the press on Thursday, as he wrapped up his tour of Africa. "The issue of Iran is clearly very complex. The negotiations that are being attempted - one day the United States says no, then the opposite - we do not know where this is heading....This has created a chaotic and critical situation for the global economy, but also there is an entire population in Iran, innocent people who are suffering because of this war," he said."
