Meeting with Takaichi to cap Marcos visit to Japan

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will visit Japan from May 26 to 29 to further reinforce Manila’s strategic partnership with Tokyo, Malacañang announced on Friday. The Presidential Communications Office said the president was invited to by the Japanese government. Marcos and first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos will be received by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako at the Imperial Palace for a welcome ceremony, state call and state banquet. Marcos will hold talks with Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae to discuss ways to strengthen their countries’ ties. They will resume their recent discussions on current international developments, especially about energy, food security and maritime security. Marcos will also meet with Japanese business groups and members of the Filipino community during the state visit. The visit coincides with the 70th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan. The two countries established diplomatic ties on July 23, 1956, and elevated their relations to a “Strengthened Strategic Partnership” in June 2015 through a joint declaration between the late president Benigno Aquino III and then-prime minister Shinzo Abe. Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko last made a state visit to the Philippines in January 2016. Marcos last state visit to Japan was in February 2023. He went there in December of that year for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations-Japan Summit. In June of last year, the first couple visited Osaka for the World Expo 2025.
