Govt extending support to 3 Pinoys in Algeria

THE Philippine government is supporting three Filipino seafarers detained in Algeria, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said Friday. In a statement, the DMW said they coordinate with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to monitor the three expatriates. DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said they remain in “close contact with the families and are providing assistance as the case moves forward.” According to the DMW, the three Filipinos were aboard the commercial vessel Harris, and were arrested on July 28, 2023, after Algerian authorities discovered 35.8 kilograms of cocaine in their possession. The agency, in coordination with the DFA through the country’s embassy in Tripoli, Libya, conducted jail visits to the detained Filipinos to check on their welfare. Cacdac said the government is “carefully reviewing” the legal remedies for the three Filipinos’ case. “We remain in touch with the families and have been supporting them throughout the past three years as the case continues,” the DMW chief said. “We are working closely with the DFA to assess the merits of their plea and its potential impact on the appeal. Based on this, we will make the appropriate recommendation to the president (Ferdinand Marcos Jr.),” he added.
