Strait in stasis - Shipping and oil tankers stuck 'waiting for permission to transit' as IRGC keeps Hormuz closed

"Footage on Friday showed a number of cargo ships and oil tankers halted in the Strait of Hormuz, as the waterway remains closed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which has linked its reopening to the end of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports. Fars News Agency reported that "hundreds of ships are waiting in the Strait of Hormuz for permission to transit through Iranian waters." The head of the International Energy Agency warned on Thursday that energy markets could lose around 13 million barrels of oil per day due to the disruption to navigation in the strait. US President Donald Trump announced on 13 April the start of a naval blockade on Iranian ports, including those in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting Tehran to close the vital shipping route. Earlier this month, Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran to allow for negotiations aimed at ending the crisis, later extending it "until Tehran presents its proposals," without specifying a timeline. Previous talks between the two sides, held in Islamabad under Pakistani mediation on April 11, did not result in a final agreement, while diplomatic efforts continue to organise further rounds of negotiations."
