On top of the world - Andean condor ‘Chaska’ soars to freedom after injured bird rescued by Peruvian authorities

"Peruvian authorities successfully released a female Andean condor named 'Chaska', after her recovery following a rescue. Chaska was found in a critical condition in the Arequipa region, before being nursed back to health, making her the fourth specimen of the species to be released in the last seven years. Footage shared by the National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) shows the condor spreading its wings during its release. Staff from the agency fitted it with solar-powered transmitters to monitor its adaptation. "Chaska has not only been released, but she now has a GPS that will allow us to conduct studies on her behaviour, that is, her ethology, and also on the distribution of her habitat," explained Erasmo Otalora, executive director of SERFOR. Chaska, whose name means 'star' in Quechua, was found showing signs of dehydration in the Huana area of Quechualla district. She was later transferred to a rehabilitation centre located in the district of Yura to receive specialist care. Medical tests indicated signs of suspected poisoning, which seriously compromised her health. After her recovery, she was deemed ready to return to her natural habitat. Chaska is the fourth Andean condor to be released in Arequipa, alongside Wayra, Sinchi and Qhapaq. "
