KARACHI: Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Chairman Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed on Friday called on Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi, where they discussed expanding Pakistan’s “blue economy” by better planning and efficient use of marine resources to support national economic growth. The meeting at the Governor House focused on opportunities in the maritime sector, including fisheries, shipping and port operations, as well as prospects for investment and modernisation. Hashmi stressed the need to harness coastal resources more efficiently to create jobs and strengthen the national economy, adding that sustainable use of marine assets could significantly boost exports. “Pakistan’s vast coastal resources can play a vital role in economic development if utilised efficiently,” the governor said. Both sides agreed on the importance of upgrading port-related infrastructure and adopting modern technologies for more productive maritime activities. The KPT chairman briefed the Governor on ongoing initiatives and highlighted challenges, including heavy traffic congestion and infrastructure constraints around port areas. They discussed the need for improved traffic management and better connectivity, noting that linking the port with Shahrah-e-Bhutto could help ease the movement of heavy vehicles and reduce congestion in the city. The meeting also reviewed measures to promote development in coastal areas and improve the welfare of local communities, with an emphasis on making Karachi Port a key hub for blue economy activities. The government is pursuing reforms and investment in the maritime sector to unlock its potential and support long-term economic growth. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
