"The Armenian diaspora in Argentina gathered alongside human rights organisations in Buenos Aires on Friday to mark the 111th anniversary of the 'Armenian Genocide.' Footage shows demonstrators chanting as they marched with torches, smoke flares, flags and banners reading, 'right of return to Artsakh' and 'the dance of peoples is one.' "April 24 represents not only history, but the present and the future," said Pablo, a member of the Armenian Institutions of the Republic of Argentina (IARA). "The Armenian Genocide continues to be denied by the Turkish state, and that denial made it possible for an entire population in Artsakh to have to abandon their homes," he continued. Participants called for international recognition of the 1915-1923 events and justice for victims, warning of the dangers of denialism. "It is very important to continue fighting, to remain active in the struggle, so that there are no more genocides in the world," Pablo said. Demonstrators also argue that their cause extends beyond the Armenian community, describing it as an issue for 'humanity' as a whole. "The Armenian genocide is an open wound," said Tomas Bataglino, "It is not only a problem for people of Armenian descent, it is a problem for everyone, it is a problem for humanity." The deportation of hundreds of thousands of Armenians in 1915-16 is still a highly contentious period in history. Turkey has repeatedly maintained that the events of the time cannot be described as a 'genocide' and estimates that around 300,000 people were killed, while the Armenian side often puts the figure at 1.5 million."
