Mercury rising - New Delhi grapples with first heatwave of 2026 as temperatures exceed 45°C

"Temperatures at locations across India broke the 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) threshold on Friday as the country experienced its first heatwave of the year. Footage shows pedestrians walking with their faces and heads covered in linen cloths and holding umbrellas. Tourists can be seen drinking lemonade from a kiosk outside India Gate. A local driver said it becomes very difficult to find passengers after noon. "It is not possible to go out in the day. One can go in the evening for work. Otherwise, it is not possible to go out during the day," said Sumit Kumar. "The public is adjusting. No one has control over the heat. If the temperatures are to rise, they will do so.” According to the Met Department, temperatures ranged between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius across most parts of the country, with 45.2 degrees Celsius recorded in Prayagraj on Friday. It also issued a warning, saying that the roasting hot conditions are likely to persist with little hope of respite on Saturday. The department has also warned that intense summer conditions are likely to persist in the coming weeks."
