"Venezuelan acting President Delcy Rodriguez welcomed her Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro to Caracas on Friday, in the first official state visit from Bogota to Venezuela since Nicolas Maduro's capture. Footage shows President Petro arriving at the palace and greeting Rodriguez before both leaders enter for talks and address the press outside the palace, where delegations can also be seen signing bilateral agreements and posing for photos. During the meeting, the presidents expressed their intention to work jointly against drug trafficking, fuel smuggling and any other form of transnational crime affecting their shared border. "Let drug trafficking groups, groups involved in fuel smuggling and other types of smuggling, know that we are taking firm steps to combat these crimes," said the Venezuelan leader. Following the talks, Petro emphasised the need for a joint strategy to confront 'mafias' operating along the border, including illegal economies such as drug trafficking, human trafficking and the illicit extraction of resources. "Today we have spoken about a coordinated common effort, thoroughly, to free border communities from mafias dedicated to various illegal economies, [...] so that the border is only for the Colombian and Venezuelan people," detailed the Colombian president. He also reflected on energy transition as a path to reducing global violence and promoting more sustainable and democratic development models in the region. "Old forms of energy tend to attract violence in the world. […] The new forms of energy that I am trying to promote in my own country can bring peace, can bring the construction of a global democracy, of a united humanity," Petro underscored. The meeting concluded with both governments committing to advance cooperation mechanisms in security, energy, trade and social development."
