High-tech herding! Russia pilots 'Safe Tundra' satellite project to track reindeer herding routes

"The pilot project 'Safe Tundra', designed to monitor reindeer grazing routes, has begun in the Yamal region of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous region. Footage from Wednesday shows herds moving across the tundra, before specialists and local residents capture selected animals to fit them with GPS tracking collars. "Thirty-one reindeer farms are participating in the project, including both municipal and private enterprises. The plan is to track over 100,000 reindeer-roughly half of the district's entire herd," said Pavel Sarotetto, deputy head of the Department for Indigenous Peoples of the North, Yamal District Administration. He added that the project will help identify the largest grazing sites and compare this data with existing information on pasture conditions, highlighting areas under critical pressure. "The pilot will run for one year. This April, we install the collars and monitor the reindeer herds as they move across different grazing areas throughout the year," Sarotetto noted. According to the government's press service, the movement data will be transmitted in real time to a digital platform and displayed on an electronic map. The system is expected to be integrated with Yamal's Unified Cartographic System in the future. Authorities also emphasise that similar tracking technologies are already in use across northern Russia to monitor wildlife. While such solutions were previously tested on a limited scale in Yamal, this new project significantly expands the scope. 'Safe Tundra' was awarded the 2026 regional grant and is being implemented with the support of indigenous organisations and local authorities."
