Cleared for takeoff - Travellers delight as Imam Khomeini Airport resumes international flights after 56-day grounding

"Passengers returned to Tehran's Imam Khomeini Airport on Saturday as international flights resumed from the capital for the first time since the outbreak of war in Iran. Footage shows travellers at the check-in counter awaiting departure. "After nearly two months, the Imam Khomeini Airport has resumed its flight operations, and, thank God, all airport infrastructure and facilities are ready, and passengers can check in and travel through this airport," stated Ramin Kashef Azar, CEO of Imam Khomeini Airport. Azar also confirmed that six flights are scheduled to depart in total - four bound for Istanbul, and one each to Muscat and Medina. "We are happy that there is a temporary period of peace and a ceasefire, but we hope that the root cause of the problems in the region will be eradicated as soon as possible," shared a passenger. The Imam Khomeini International Airport ceased operations on February 28, 2026, following US-Israeli strikes on Iran, resulting in an 8-week closure of Iranian airspace. Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week truce with Iran to allow for negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement to end the crisis. He later extended it to allow Tehran to present a 'unified proposal' without specifying a timeframe. The first round of direct talks between the United States and Iran was held in Islamabad on April 11 and 12, following a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire on April 8. That round ended without an agreement, as diplomatic efforts continue over a new round of negotiations."
