You can chalk this one up as another unfortunate twist in the Toronto Blue Jays' 2026 season. Several Blue Jays players have underwhelmed to start the campaign. That, coupled with a rash of injuries, leaves them with just 10 wins in 25 games thus far. One player who has stepped up though, is Louis Varland. The 28-year-old has arguably been the Blue Jays' best player thus far. His 0.9 Wins Above Replacement is tied for the team lead, alongside Kevin Gausman and Dylan Cease. Varland has accomplished that while pitching in half as many innings. However, his strong start didn't prevent him from being duped earlier this week. A video surfaced on Friday of Varland dishing out autographs to fans in Toronto. However, things took a turn for the worse when he realized one of the fans wasn't backing the Blue Jays. Not only that, but the fan in question was repping the Los Angeles Dodgers. The St. Paul, Minnesota native looked up from signing someone's glove, only to realize they were wearing a Dodgers shirt. "Nice shirt," Varland said sarcastically before giving the fan a thumbs down. He then expressed disbelief with the fan's decision to ask for an autograph, while showing regret for his decision. "You had me sign your glove, wearing that shirt?" "I'm gonna scribble it out," he said. "Im serious. Let me scribble it out." "That's tough. I should have looked. That's on me." Hopefully, the screw-up won't affect Varland's performance on the mound. So far this season, he hasn't given up an earned run during his 12 appearances.
