'Justice is influenced by Milei government' - Argentines divided over seizure of former president Kirchner assets in Rio Gallegos

"Argentines in Rio Gallegos remain divided over the seizure of assets belonging to former president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, following a ruling by Argentina's highest criminal court in the so-called 'Vialidad' corruption case. Footage filmed in Rio Gallegos on Saturday shows various properties seized from the former president, as residents share their views on the Court of Cassation's decision. "It is a way of also believing in justice, because the same people are asking for what was supposedly taken [by Cristina] to be returned. So you cannot make that much money in such a short time," said resident Marcela. In contrast, local Graciela questioned the judicial process that led to the former president's conviction. "I think she has been wrongly judged to be detained," she remarked, while also criticising the conduct of the judiciary. Along the same lines, citizen Gustavo expressed doubts about judicial independence, suggesting that the political context and the current administration of President Javier Milei could influence the case against Kirchner. "I think that today the justice system is very influenced by the new government, and it seems to me that it is, on that side, that these issues are brought back up, to divert a bit, let us say, what is happening in the country," he argued. Resident Florencia claimed there were irregularities in the arrest and conviction of the former president, noting that it has left a 'very deep precedent' in society. "I am not a Kirchnerist, nor do I agree with many things Cristina did, but it does seem quite unfair to me that she has been imprisoned without sufficient evidence," she stated. The seizure order covers assets belonging to Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and her children, Maximo and Florencia, as well as those of businessman Lazaro Baez, to recover nearly 685 billion pesos (492.6 million USD, 420.2 million EUR) deemed to have caused harm to the state in the Vialidad case. Among the properties in Rio Gallegos are ten residential units on Mitre Street at number 500, a property on 25 de Mayo Street at number 200, and another located on Avenida Presidente Nestor Kirchner at number 400.
