"Hundreds of protesters gathered at Tel Aviv's Habima Square on Saturday, demanding a state commission of inquiry into the October 7 attacks and calling for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government to be held accountable. Footage shows protesters marching and chanting slogans, holding placards reading 'Democracy will prevail' and 'Hope will prevail', some wearing masks of Netanyahu, outgoing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Police can also be seen pushing away locals who clash with rally participants. The Hungarian flags were carried by a group of around 200 demonstrators who marched from the Hungarian Embassy to Habima Square in a show of solidarity with the popular movement that ousted Orban, a Netanyahu ally whose attacks on Hungary's judiciary made him a symbol for Israeli critics of the current government. The father of Staff Sergeant Elroy Ben Shitrit, who was killed in the Hamas attacks on the Nahal Oz army base on the morning of October 7, demanded a probe into the events. "It is not a political demand," Rafi Ben Shitrit asserted while addressing protesters. "It is a principled, ethical, and moral demand." "My heart is with the hearts of millions of Israelis who wish and pray for the day when the State of Israel will return to a proper path of national responsibility, of truth-telling leadership, that will establish a state commission of inquiry that will do justice for the fallen," he added. The protest comes as the Israeli government continues to block and deny the immediate formation of a legally binding, independent investigation into the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas."
