"Thousands of Argentines marched with torches in Buenos Aires on Saturday in defence of glaciers, water resources and public education. The protest came amid anger over Congress's refusal to protect periglacial zones and approve funding for universities. Footage shows demonstrators gathering near the Buenos Aires Obelisk, holding placards reading 'The glacier law must not be touched,' while drums and chants echoed through the crowd. The rally brought together students, teachers, social groups and environmental organisations concerned about public education and the protection of natural resources. The protest followed President Javier Milei's cuts to public education funding, as well as changes to the Glacier Law that redefine protected areas and allow mining in zones that were previously restricted. "It is terrible what they are going to do, because what we are living through is a nightmare with this president who hates us, who creates poverty, dismantles healthcare," said a demonstrator. "It seems to us that this government's environmental policy is clear. It is to put all our resources at the service of big companies," added another protester. Organisers said protests would continue to keep the issue on the agenda and press the government for a response."
